Transition from Infant Care to Playgroup
The transition from Infant care to Playgroup marks a significant developmental milestone for both children and parents. Here are some changes you can expect and ways you can be involved to make the transition smoother for your Little One:
  1. Increased Independence: As children transition from infancy to preschool age, they begin to develop increased independence in various areas such as self-care, communication, and social interaction. Parents can expect their child to start expressing preferences, making choices, and asserting themselves more.
You can let them practice self-care by letting them be more independent at home; dressing up by themselves, self-feeding, taking off their clothes and diapers on their own, and preparing their own bed!
  1. Socialization Skills: Playgroup provides an opportunity for children to interact with peers in a structured setting. Parents can expect their child to start developing social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and cooperating with others. Encouraging positive social interactions and modelling appropriate behaviour can help children navigate these new social dynamics.
You can start bringing your Little One for more playdates! This will allow them to have more interactions with others and consequently practise their social skills.
  1. Routine and Structure: Playgroup often follows a structured daily routine with designated times for activities such as circle time, indoor/outdoor play, snack time, and nap time. Parents can expect their child to become more accustomed to routines and transitions, which can promote a sense of security and predictability.
You can slowly reduce their nap time at home, too, so that they can build up their stamina for longer activity time in Playgroup.
  1. Cognitive and Language Development: Playgroup offers opportunities for cognitive and language development through age-appropriate activities, storytelling, music, art, and play. Parents can expect their child to start expanding their vocabulary, asking questions, and engaging in imaginative play as they explore new concepts and ideas.
You can start doing more drawing, reading and counting activities with your Little One. This is also an opportunity for them to show off their abilities to Mummy and Daddy!
Overall, the transition from infant care to Playgroup is an exciting time filled with new experiences and opportunities for growth. While it may come with some challenges, with patience, support, and encouragement from the parents and teachers, our Little Ones typically adapt well to their new environment and thrive in the Playgroup setting.
